Our skilled orthopaedic surgeons are experienced in the latest joint replacement techniques and artificial joint technology, which allows them to develop customized surgical strategies designed to meet each patient’s unique physical needs.

What Is Joint Replacement?

Joints are formed by the ends of two or more bones connected by tissue called ligaments. The ends of the bones are covered in cartilage and healthy cartilage serves as a protective cushion, allowing smooth and low-friction movement of the joint. There are many ways that joints can become damaged, including traumatic injury, wear, arthritis, and other types of disease. While some individuals struggle with uncomfortable tissue inflammation around the joint, others experience painful bone-on-bone friction when the cartilage has worn away.

Joint replacement surgery (or replacement arthroplasty) can often provide relief from these conditions when more conservative treatment methods or lifestyle changes have failed. During a full joint replacement procedure, all damaged, diseased, and/or dysfunctional parts of the joint structures are removed and replaced with an artificial joint implant (orthopedic prosthesis). After successful recovery, healing, and physical therapy, replacement joints ideally provide improved articulation, comfort, and health. In the appropriate instances, our surgeons may recommend partial joint replacement or minimally invasive joint replacement techniques to reduce tissue trauma and recovery time. When adjustments need to be made to previous joint replacement surgeries, our surgeons may be able to perform revision joint replacement surgery to achieve an improved surgical outcome.
